MEG and TEG air coolers for the Midia Gas Development Project in the Black Sea

MEG and TEG air coolers for the Midia Gas Development Project in the Black Sea

Introduction

In 2019, AITESA actively participated in the development of a natural gas treatment plant located in the Black Sea, within the framework of the Midia Gas Development Project. This strategic project sought to harness the gas resources of the Black Sea through a state-of-the-art offshore facility. AITESA’s contribution consisted of the design, manufacture and supply of two air coolers for the regeneration systems of monoethylene glycol (MEG) and triethylene glycol (TEG), used for the dehydration of natural gas.

Challenge and Technical Solution

  • The offshore operation required robust, compact equipment capable of operating under demanding conditions, both in terms of pressure and thermal efficiency. To meet these requirements, AITESA designed two custom-made air coolers:
    • TEG (triethylene glycol) air cooler: designed to operate at a pressure of 60 bar absolute, with a cooling capacity of 3000 kg/h, reducing the fluid temperature from 93.5 ºC to 50 ºC.
    • MEG (monoethylene glycol) air cooler: designed to operate at 3.5 bar absolute, with a cooling capacity of 446 kg/h, lowering the fluid temperature from 81.7 ºC to 50 ºC.

Both units were designed according to strict customer specifications and international standards applicable to the offshore industry.

Results

In a total timeframe of 9 months, AITESA successfully completed all phases of the project: detailed engineering, fabrication, on-site blank assembly, test runs and preparation for shipment to the Black Sea platform.

Thanks to this solution, the client was able to efficiently integrate the glycol regeneration systems into its gas treatment process, improving operational reliability and ensuring compliance with the project’s technical and environmental requirements.
