Solar sludge drying, gasification and energy | AITESA

Integrated solution for solar drying, gasification and energy recovery of sludge

By AITESA

Sludge management represents one of the main operational and economic challenges in WWTPs and water treatment plants. The costs associated with transport and disposal, odor problems, energy consumption and an increasingly demanding regulatory framework limit the viability of traditional models.

From its participation in the European project LIFE DRY4GAS, AITESA has developed an integrated solution that allows treating the sludge in the installation itself, reducing the final waste and recovering its energy content.

What is the Integrated Solar solution?

Integrated Solar combines three complementary stages in a single compact system:

  • Solar drying of the sludge in a covered shed, using solar energy to significantly reduce its moisture content and volume.
  • Gasification of the dry sludge, transforming it into a combustible gas.
  • Thermal and electrical energy recovery, reusable within the plant itself.

Three main outputs are obtained as a result of the process:

  • Lower volume of waste to be managed.
  • Production of thermal and electric energy for self-consumption.
  • Obtaining a bioproduct with external valorization potential.

General system operation

The sludge is introduced into a solar drying shed, where the combination of solar radiation and controlled ventilation reduces its humidity without significant energy consumption.

Once dried, the sludge is fed to the gasification system, where it is transformed into a combustible gas. This gas is used to generate thermal and electrical energy, which can be integrated into the plant’s own consumption, improving the overall energy balance of the plant.

The system design allows for continuous, robust operation adapted to real operating conditions.

This solution is designed for WWTPs and plants that manage sludge and are looking for viable technical alternatives to conventional transport and disposal models.

It is especially suitable for installations that require:

  • On-site sludge treatment.
  • Reduction of operating costs and dependence on external managers.
  • Improved environmental performance.
  • Move towards biofactory and energy self-sufficiency models.

AITESA's Scope

AITESA designs and implements the system adapting it to sludge production, climatic conditions and existing infrastructures. The modular approach facilitates its integration in operating facilities and allows its future evolution.

This type of solution helps to reduce costs, improve energy efficiency and comply with current environmental requirements, while maintaining a realistic and operation-oriented technical design.
