Engineering and supply of an air preheater for the cement industry
By AITESA
Introduction
In 2020, AITESA carried out a heat recovery project at a cement production facility located in Sant Vicenç dels Horts (Barcelona). The aim of the project was to increase the efficiency of a cement rotary kiln.
Solution
Engineering and supply of an air preheater, which feeds the rotary cement kiln. This kiln consists of two stages, the combustion chamber and a tower for preheating the incoming raw material. The preheater receives the hot gases at 510ºC, and transfers the heat to an ambient air stream raising the temperature to 444ºC before supply to the kiln. A honeycomb type valve is used to extract the decanted dust at the base of unit.
Results
The cement industry accounts for around 8% of the worlds CO2 emissions, which puts it in third place behind only power generation and transportation. Therefore, solutions that improve sustainability and reduce impact on the environment are essential. The introduction of heat recovery has helped to decarbonize the cement plant’s production process and reduce its operating costs.
