EPC of 2 electric boilers for a meat processing plant

By AITESA

Introduction

In 2022, the project to install 2 high voltage electric boilers with electrodes of 20 MWe each, for one of the world’s leading manufacturers and marketers of casings for meat products began.

The objective of the project was to decarbonize the production process and reduce its operating costs.

Solution

The purpose of the project is to generate superheated steam at a temperature of 204ºC and 13barg of pressure, using the electrical energy generated by a solar photovoltaic plant installed by the Client in the vicinity of the factory. Due to the location of the factory in the north of Spain, it is expected that the electric boilers will be used for a little more than 2,000 hours per year, during which the photovoltaic plant will be able to provide 100% of the electrical energy consumed by the electric boilers. The scope of the project includes the following supplies and services:

  • Supply and installation of 2 Electric Boilers of 20MWe each, capable of generating a total of 60Tn/h of steam connected to the 6kV high voltage network.
  • Supply and installation of 2 superheaters of 275kWe each, connected to the 400V low voltage network.
  • Supply and installation of all auxiliary equipment required for the correct operation of the electric boilers: feed water pumps, circulating water pump, chemical dosing system, condensate tank and steam flow meter.
  • Supply and assembly of water and steam piping for the interconnection of the different equipment and its connection to the main steam manifold of the factory.
  • Start-up and training of factory operators.

Results

The implementation of this innovative technology has not only succeeded in decarbonizing the production process of the food factory, but also allows the Client not to depend on a single fuel, which gives it a competitive advantage over its competitors.
