Diverter dumpers

Flexibility and control at the heart of the thermal cycle

The diverters or gas distributors allow directing the flow of exhaust gases to different destinations such as a recovery boiler (HRSG) or a bypass duct with total precision and tightness.

They are key equipment in combined cycle plants, cogeneration and industrial facilities where reliability and operational flexibility make the difference.

What they do and how they work

A diverter acts as a large three-way valve for exhaust gases. Its T-shaped body connects the turbine outlet to two possible routes:

  • To the HRSG, to take advantage of the residual heat and generate steam.

  • To the bypass or stack, when direct operation or maintenance is required.

The flow is redirected by louver dampers that open and close synchronously, ensuring fast and safe transitions without leakage or thermal shocks.

Their design includes air sealing, multilayer internal insulation and pneumatic or electric drive systems, adapted to the thermal and space conditions of each installation.

Configuration and components

AITESA’s diverters are supplied as complete equipment or integrated within the gas system, and include:

  • Tandem Louver type dampers for HRSG and bypass.
  • Seal air system with redundant fans and automatic pressure control.
  • Pneumatic or electric main actuators, with safety tanks.
  • Customized frame and casing, with thermal insulation and C5 corrosion protection according to ISO 12944.
  • Blades and seals in stainless steel or Inconel, with sealing efficiency up to 99.95%.
  • Instrumentation and control ready for DCS/PLC integration.

Diverter operation

  • The diverter can operate in different modes according to process requirements. In normal conditions, the gas flow is fully directed to the HRSG or to the bypass, with fast and safe transitions. It can also work in intermediate positions, allowing the flow rate or temperature to be regulated in a controlled manner when the process requires it.

In the event of a power failure or loss of power, the system has an emergency mode powered by an air reservoir, which ensures the safety of the installation at all times.

Thanks to an optimized design, maneuvering times are typically between 30 and 45 seconds, offering an agile response without compromising the tightness and durability of the assembly.

How to improve your operation

A well-designed diverter not only directs the gas flow: it protects, optimizes and gives flexibility to the thermal process.

Its air sealing system guarantees total tightness, preventing leaks and protecting both the HRSG and downstream equipment against thermal shocks. The modular design facilitates maintenance and allows easy integration into existing systems, reducing downtime and operating costs.

These features make it an essential element in combined cycle, cogeneration and HRSG retrofit plants in gas turbines, as well as in systems with stack bypass or flare. It is also used in sectors such as chemical, paper, food, refining and energy, where precision, safety and operational flexibility are key.

Overall, AITESA’s diverters offer safer, more efficient and reliable processes, with sustained performance that prolongs system life and ensures operational continuity under any conditions.

Why AITESA

At AITESA, a diverter is not an isolated piece of equipment: it is part of a complete system.

Our value lies in integration, in understanding how each component of the gas circuit interacts and in adapting the design to the actual process, space and regulatory conditions.

We collaborate with leading manufacturers such as Braden, combining their expertise with ours in engineering, insulation and control, to offer robust, efficient and durable solutions.

From the design phase to the operation assistance, we accompany our customers with a clear objective: to guarantee reliability, efficiency and control in each project.
